Historical Photos: Ten Thousand Falun Gong Practitioners Peacefully Appealed on April 25, 1999

April 03, 2012

By an eyewitness (now residing in Germany) to the April 25th Appeal

(Minghui.orgI was born and grew up in Beijing. I was at the April 25th Peaceful Appeal in 1999. I’m including some photos that have never been published before in order to show what really happened at the April 25th Peaceful Appeal.

This photo was taken on April 25, 1999, from the rear window of a bus that was going from north to south on Fuyou Street. Falun Gong practitioners are on the left side of the photo and the red wall on the right is Zhongnanhai. Between the practitioners and Zhongnanhai is Fuyou Street.

I was standing at the north end of Fuyou Street when I took the photo facing south. On the left side is Zhongnanhai, and on the right are practitioners staging a peaceful appeal. Fuyou Street is between the practitioners and Zhongnanhai. Standing across the street are plainclothes officers and uniformed police blocking the road.

Communist Regime Officials Receive Karmic Retribution for Persecuting Practitioners

By a Clearwisdom correspondent in China

(Clearwisdom.net) Since July 20, 1999, people at every level of the Communist regime have participated in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners in order to achieve personal gain and power. However, regardless of who they are, sooner or later, those who take part in persecuting cultivators of the Buddha Fa will be subject to heavenly retribution. The following are a few of the many cases of officials who received retribution as a result of their participation in the persecution.

Village Head Receives Karmic Retribution That Extends to His Family

An Shanpo, head of Beijia Village in Jiacun Town, Wangdou County, Hebei Province, actively participated in the persecution. When practitioners clarified the facts to him, he refused to listen and often brought agents to practitioners’ homes to harass and arrest them. Just before the Beijing Olympics in 2008, he brought a dozen officials from the town government and police station to arrest Ms. Zhou Yanli. Because no one was at home, the officials went out to the fields to look for her. When they found Ms. Zhou, they beat her. Because it had just rained, the ground was muddy and Ms. Zhou was covered in mud. Due to the beating her face was swollen and her body was covered in bruises. She was then taken away and locked up in the Wangdu County Detention Center for three months.

In 2010, 59-year-old An Shanpo had a stroke and half of his body became paralyzed. Then his son was involved in a fatal car accident. Several people were killed and injured and the son had to pay hundreds of thousands of yuan in compensation. An Shanpo died at the end of November 2011.

Only Son of the Head of the Department of Justice Dies in a Car Accident

The Shanxi Province Department of Justice controls the labor camps and prisons where practitioners are persecuted. In April 2008, Wang Shuicheng became head of the Justice Department and assisted the Shanxi Province 610 Office in persecuting practitioners. Even today, he continues to persecute practitioners.

From 2000 to 2003, Wang Shuicheng was head of the Propaganda Department for Yuncheng City. He gave orders to media outlets controlled by the department—such as magazines and TV stations—to deliberately disseminate slander about Falun Gong and knowingly spread lies to the public.

His son died in a car accident at the end of November 2011.

Farm Party Secretary Suffers Retribution for His Evil Deeds

Zhang Jisheng from Tanghai County in Hebei Province was born in 1957. When he became Party secretary of Wunongchang in 2001, he gave orders to persecute practitioners in his jurisdiction, including following and monitoring them, setting up brainwashing sessions, arranging their illegal arrests and detention, and sending them to forced labor camps.

Zhang Jisheng was transferred to another location several years ago. Currently he is the supervisor of the Tanghai County Swampland Management Office. According to reliable sources, when Zhang was Party secretary of Wunongchang, he sold land belonging to the regime and embezzled all the money from the sale. His crime was discovered, and now Zhang has been sentenced to prison for corruption and bribery.

Vietnamese Government Condemned for Sentencing Falun Gong Practitioners (Photos)

By Clearwisdom correspondent Tang En

(Clearwisdom.net) After being detained for seventeen months, Mr. Vu Duc Trung and his brother-in-law Mr. Le Van Thanh, Falun Gong practitioners in Vietnam, were sentenced to three years and two years in prison, respectively, on November 10, 2011. They had been put on trial for sending short wave signals of Sound of Hope radio programs to Mainland China. The Vietnamese government’s mistreatment and sentencing of Falun Gong practitioners and its caving in to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has triggered concern and condemnation in the international community.

International human rights organizations and other human rights organizations around the world have condemned the Vietnamese government for the detention of Falun Gong practitioners and infringement on their freedom of speech in the past year. Upon learning of the sentence, Falun Gong practitioners in Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Austria, Taiwan, Korea, Australia and other countries protested at Vietnamese embassies and consulates.

Mr. Vu Duc Trung, 31, CEO of a high-tech company in Hanoi, and Mr. Le Van Thanh, 36, were arrested and detained by the Department of Police and the Ministry of Public Security in June 2011.

Ms. Doris Chen, the spokesperson for Sound of Hope in Sydney, said that Mr. Vu and Mr. Le exposed the crimes of the CCP to the Chinese society, including the persecution of Falun Gong and the CCP’s forcibly harvesting organs from living Falun Gong practitioners. She also said that what they did didn’t harm the Vietnamese people or government and was legal, based on Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Sending short wave radio signals does not violate criminal law in Vietnam. The broadcast to Mainland China broke the information blockade by the CCP, which angered the CCP and had them put pressure on the Vietnamese government. By detaining and sentencing the practitioners, the Vietnamese government yielded completely to the CCP.

On October 5, 2011, Freedom House condemned China’s use of diplomatic pressure to engage in further crackdowns on religious minorities and to restrict freedom of expression outside of its borders. On the same day, Reporters Without Borders also released an article condemning the Vietnamese government’s actions towards the two Falun Gong practitioners.

二零一一年十月四日,美国首府华盛顿特区的部份法轮功学员和人权团体在越南驻美使馆前集会,抗议越南政府屈从中共压力,非法拘捕并审判两名法轮功学员。

Falun Gong practitioners and human rights groups gathered in front of the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington D.C. on October 4, 2011, to protest the detention of Falun Gong practitioners.

Voice of Vietnamese Americans (VVA) issued a statement on November 4, urging the Vietnamese government to respect freedom of speech and religion, follow the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and release the detained Falun Gong practitioners.

A two-day human rights dialogue was held between the U.S. and Vietnam starting on November 9, 2011. Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, and the Falun Dafa Association in Washington D.C. issued statements condemning the Vietnamese government’s treatment of Falun Gong practitioners, and called for the American government to help the two Vietnamese Falun Gong practitioners gain freedom.

Mark Toner, Deputy Spokesman of the U.S Department of State, called the dialogue “exactly an opportunity for them to discuss a range of human rights issues between Vietnam and the U.S.” Another official of the State Department said the U.S. had clear standing on the issue of Falun Gong as well as the human rights problems in China and Vietnam. Both China and Vietnam were on the list of Countries of Particular Concern of the recent IRF report.

Falun Gong practitioners protest the imprisonment of practitioners by the Vietnamese government during the U.S.-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue on November 9, 2011.

New York-based Human Rights Watch called the sentencing of Mr. Le and Mr. Vu, “a violation of freedom of expression.” “Vietnam should not violate human rights and punish its own citizens merely because their activism displeased China,” Phil Robertson, Human Rights Watch’s deputy Asia director said in a statement.

“This is a sad day for Vietnam,” said Falun Gong spokesman Erping Zhang. “Sentencing Trung and Thanh to prison in a show trial is shameless and sets a dangerous precedent of the Vietnamese government caving to Chinese Communist Party pressure,” says Zhang. “We hope the international community can redouble its efforts to free these men immediately and use whatever leverage possible to ensure that the Vietnamese authorities stop abusing local Falun Gong practitioners.”

Falun Gong was spread to Vietnam in 2006. In recent years, Vietnam has bowed to the CCP’s influence. While Falun Gong is officially legal in Vietnam, the state has put systematic pressure on Falun Gong practitioners. A document issued by the Vietnamese government in April 2011 indicated its suppression of Falun Gong is due to pressure from the CCP. The Vietnamese police beat and dispersed about fifty Falun Gong practitioners who were protesting peacefully in front of the Chinese Embassy on November 8.

A Former Party Secretary Condemns the Chinese Communist Regime

By a Falun Gong practitioner from China

(Clearwisdom.net) Not long ago I ran into an old friend that I hadn’t seen for a long time. He used to be a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) secretary. When we talked about Falun Gong, since I knew he was a Party member for years, I was surprised to hear him making the following heartfelt remarks.

He said, “Talking about Falun Gong, I really know a lot about practitioners. I was in charge of this. After I retired, I was selected to be in charge of Falun Gong practitioners in our neighborhood. Frankly speaking, at that time I listened to the regime’s lies and monitored practitioners for any possible kind of ‘big’ things they might do. After observing them during these last two years, I’ve changed my mind. My observation of practitioners has proved to me that my previous notions were wrong. Falun Gong is really great, and practitioners are just extraordinary! I know very well that the regime has used all kinds of methods to persecute Falun Gong. And what has the outcome been? After all these years, they have not only failed to ‘defeat Falun Gong,’ but is helping to overthrow themselves. Heaven’s will can’t be disobeyed!

He continued, “From the central government to the local governments, every level of the CCP has ruthlessly suppressed Falun Gong. The crackdown campaign is even worse than the ‘Cultural Revolution,’ the ‘Three Anti’s Campaign,’ or the ‘Five Anti’s Campaign.’ The regime arrests and savagely beats practitioners, extorts money from them, sentences them to prison and forced labor camps, and even the practitioners’ family members are implicated. It is simply overwhelming. And then guess what happened? The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party was published. All the evil deeds committed by the communist regime were so thoroughly laid out. Many people have read the book—it is so moving to read it! There are indeed some very capable Falun Gong practitioners. The book very thoroughly reveals the truth.”

I said, “You are right, the communist regime is very extreme in doing evil things. You have been a Party official for so many years, and you know firsthand about the evil nature of the communist regime.”

He said, “In the past, while I was still inside the system, I didn’t truly realize the extent of its evil nature. But now, I have gradually come to understand it. The regime is completely finished, and nothing can save it. I really admire Falun Gong practitioners now. In my opinion, even dozens or hundreds of Party members can’t be compared with one Falun Gong practitioner.” I said, “No, not even a thousand members.”

I asked him, “Did you quit the Party?” He asked, “Did you?” I answered, “Yes.” He said, “Me, too.”

I smiled, “That’s great. If you quit the Party, you will be safe.” He also smiled and agreed, “That’s right! That’s right!”

I Did Not Expect Falun Gong To Be So Incredibly Good (Photo)

By Clearwisdom correspondent Zhen Yuyan in Taipei, Taiwan

(Clearwisdom.net) There is an inspirational Chinese saying: “Disadvantage is advantage.” However, today’s prevailing attitude in Taiwan is more like, “It is good enough that I do not take advantage of people!” No one can remain calm when being taken advantage of.

Yet Mr. Chang Chao-Chi is an exception. Until he started practicing Falun Gong, Mr. Chang was fighting over the smallest of self-interests to get ahead. Nowadays, Mr. Chang receives a lot more in return when he appears to be taken advantage of.

Mr. and Mrs. Chang started practicing Falun Gong in March of 2001. Their three children, after witnessing the beauty of Falun Gong, decided to take up the practice as well. Since then, Mr. Chang and his wife haven’t had to worry about the academic performance or the morality of their children.

Mr. Chang is 44 years old with only a middle school diploma. He has been a fruit vendor since he was 17. He is currently the owner of a large fruit and vegetable store. Because he follows the principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in operating his business, Mr. Chang maintains many loyal customers. He employs seven individuals to help run the business. Once an overworked business owner with hepatitis C, Mr. Chang is now perfectly healthy and content. He once commented, “I never expected Falun Gong to be so good for my health and morality!”

Mr. Chang Chao-Chi experiences the beauty of Falun Gong through his own practice

A Hard Life as a Fruit Vendor

When Mr. Chang was little, his oldest brother started a small business as a vegetable vendor. When Mr. Chang graduated from middle school, his brother helped him start a fruit vendor business of his own. He taught Mr. Chang how to purchase fruit from wholesalers and sell it on the streets. It was a hard life – making the mind and body weary. Because he did not have a license to sell merchandise on the streets, he remained constantly on the look-out for the police. He awoke every day at 3 a.m. in order to get to the wholesalers’ market on time by 7 a.m; he would take only a one-hour break at noon. He would later move his stand to another evening food and vegetable market where customers would shop before their evening meal. His fruit stand would remain open until 11 p.m.

After four years of such demanding labor, Mr. Chang finally saved enough money to rent a small store. By then, however, he felt completely worn out. Despite his fatigue, he refused to hire help and instead insisted on doing everything himself. This decision took a toll on his health, and he would become exhausted well before the end of each day; in fact, he always felt exhausted. Sometimes he would fall asleep while counting the day’s revenue and the coins would slip from his fingers, falling all over the ground. While driving, he would often pull over a few times to nap before he could drive again. Before he got married at 26, Mr. Chang was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and the hospital could do very little to help him.

The Best Thing That Happened in Mr. Chang’s Life

Together with the help of his brothers, sister, and cousins, Mr. Chang expanded the business to include five fruit and vegetable stores. With so many owners all operating the same stores together, it became difficult to cooperate, so each person became manager of their own store. As a result of a random drawing, Mr. Chang took over operations of the store in Neihu. As the newest store, it still required intensive start-up work. The others said he was unlucky, but now Mr. Chang reminisces, “I was very lucky to have come to Neihu because I was afforded the opportunity to learn Falun Gong. It changed the perspective on my life, my health, and my entire mentality.”

Mr. Chang’s next-door neighbor in Neihu was the owner of an organic restaurant and produce stand. The restaurant was also a location where free nine-day Falun Gong seminars (video lectures from Falun Gong’s founder, Mr. Li Hongzhi) were held on a regular basis. Although Mr. Chang became curious about the practice, he resisted making any inquiry amidst the rigors of operating the new store. However, one of his employees did sign up to attend the free nine-day instruction. After practicing Falun Gong for six months, he presented Mr. Chang with a gold cover copy of Zhuan Falun. It took Mr. Chang nearly one month to finally finish reading the book, but by the time he did, he felt strongly in his heart the desire to follow the teachings. From then forward, he made the decision to start practicing Falun Gong, as did his wife.

Mr. Chang said, “I was blown away when I first came across ‘Zhen-Shan-Ren Is the Sole Criterion To Discern Good and Bad People’ in Zhuan Falun. Street vendors are accustomed to not considering each other at all in order to get ahead. They will behave dishonorably if they can get away with it. It seems important to minimize losses, so they will never admit their faults. My values were completely transformed when I finished Zhuan Falun. After I attended the free Falun Gong seminar for nine days, I started going to the park where Falun Gong practitioners perform the exercises together. No matter how tired I was, I would go to practice the exercises. I would not allow myself to be lazy and miss the opportunity.”

Soon, Mr. Chang stopped feeling constantly tired. Nowadays, he sleeps little, but he feels energetic every day. In fact, he hasn’t felt as energetic in decades.

Mr. Chang said, “Before I started practicing Falun Gong, I did not expect the practice to be so good!”

A Life of Strife and Discord

Mr. Chang used to be an impatient man. Before he started practicing Falun Gong, he possessed a terrible temper. People’s words and actions would irritate him. On one instance, he became enraged over an argument between his sister and brother-in-law in the other room. When he got up to attempt to end the fight, he passed out in anger before he could even try.

Before Mr Chang started practicing Falun Gong, he would fight with other vendors when he felt he had been taken advantage of. It even seemed normal to retaliate. One day because Mr. Chang was aggressively shouting his sales slogans, another vendor beat him up for being too loud. Mr. Chang thought the bullying was uncalled for, so he found five other men to beat the other man up. Afterwards, he found an intermediary to prevent the man from filing a lawsuit, but still had pay for the man’s medical expenses as a result of the retaliation.

Mr. Chang recalled, “Actually, it was a horrible feeling to have retaliated. For a month I was on the edge of my seat. I feared that he might get revenge at any time. I was living in fear. It was really torture.”

Word of Mouth Brings Customers to Mr. Chang’s Store

Since Mr. Chang started practicing Falun Gong, he has attempted to always follow the cultivation principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. He practices altruism and mindfulness. Another substantial improvement reflects in the way he manages his business.

Before Mr. Chang started practicing Falun Gong, he preferred purchasing inventory from auctions because the prices were comparatively low, which translated into higher profit margins. He only ever considered paying the lowest price, with no concern for quality. Mr. Chang describes this nature as “Vultures fighting over carcasses. Profit is everything. People will walk over their own grandmother to get ahead.”

Now Mr. Chang considers the other vendors and his customers before himself. Instead of buying his inventory at auctions, he now buys from wholesalers. This guarantees excellent quality of goods and honest service. Word travels fast, and soon customers began flocking to his store.

If Everybody Were Like You, We Would No Longer Need the Police.”

When Mr. Chang purchases from the wholesalers’ market, he never negotiates the prices. He requires himself to be truthful, and he decides to trust other people. Mr. Chang said, “If I should make a bad purchase, I don’t blame others. I blame myself for the lack of expertise. As a result, I learn more quickly.” At first, the sellers were astonished to find someone as “foolish” as Mr. Chang, but after several years, Mr. Chang won their trust. Sometimes if Mr. Chang finds something wrong with the quality of the merchandise, he will gently alert the wholesaler responsible. The seller will usually ask to compensate him immediately. Mr. Chang always declines. Fellow vendors will comment, “It is not fair. When I ask for compensation, you [the wholesaler] refuse. He [Mr. Chang] does not want your compensation even though you insist.”

One day Mr. Chang bought ten durian fruits. His truck was already full, so he asked a seller to watch over the fruit in the meantime. When he returned the next day, the seller looked confused, saying, “Did you leave me with any durian? I didn’t see any durian.” Mr. Chang replied, “Oh, never mind.” A vendor overhearing the conversation asked Mr. Chang, “Falun Gong practitioners are truly different. He told you they are missing and you accept it? Why do you not argue with him? He had your durian.” Mr. Chang responded, “If they are destined to belong to me, then I will have them back one way or another. If they are not, then they will never find their way back to me. He did not lose them on purpose.” After 30 minutes, the seller told Mr. Chang, “I have found your durian.”

Many sellers and wholesalers know that Mr. Chang practices Falun Gong. Many have commented, “If everybody were like you, we would no longer need the police.”

Background:

Falun Gong is also known as Falun Dafa. It is a Buddha-school cultivation practice founded by Mr. Li Hongzhi and introduced to the world in May 1992. It is based on the principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Over 100 million people worldwide are practicing Falun Gong. It allows practitioners to ascend to higher realms of cultivation practice and has brought many positive effects to its practitioners’ health, morality, and conduct – a testimony that Falun Gong is a great cultivation practice.
